Sod Turning Events

Also known as Breaking Ground, Ground Breaking or Turning of the Sod. Groundbreaking ceremonies are exactly that. The first sod-cutting, where a shovel digs into the dirt for clearing, excavating, and leveling the area according to the architect's plan. These ceremonies have been used for centuries to celebrate the start of a new venture and give thanks to those who made it possible. The turning of the sod is a crucial public relations part of any construction project and holds great significance to the property development / construction industry and the wider community involved.

Modern ground-breaking ceremonies provide an opportunity to highlight how the development will positively impact the community, customers/clients, and employees. People of influence are often elected to deliver a speech, whether it be the founder of the company or a member of local, state or federal Government.  These speeches provide a platform to showcase how a company is growing, meeting its mission, and/or planning for the future.

It is common to also include a Smoking Ceremony as a mark of respect to the traditional custodians of the land with a Welcome to Country. The smoking ceremony, according to the traditional owners, is a way of cleansing the area by smouldering native plants to create smoke which wards off any “bad” spirits and at the same time purifying the area both physically and spiritually. The Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country is performed by an aboriginal elder of the land on which the construction project is to commence.
