Now that we have arrived in 2017, what will the New Year bring? What trends will we see popping up in our events? What will be the big draw cards, what will be fresh and innovative and what will be the tired, stale old things will we see over and over again?

The team at Mister Milford have had a ball putting together a list of some of our least favourite things to see at an event, some of our pet peeves and eye-roll-inducing faux pas along with some cracker new and interesting alternatives that we would love to see shape the event industry in 2017.

1. No more warm champagne

First impressions last and they are key to the opening of your event. Why then, oh why, do event managers allow warm welcome drinks to be served when guests arrive?

Especially if your client has forked out the cash for champagne to be served in place of the house, Australian sparkling, guests deserve a chilled glass of French bubbles on arrival.

Work with your venue to ensure that the drinks are chilled. Pay a little extra for beverage stations with iced tubs close to the entry points, and ensure that the first drinks are poured as close to doors open time as possible.

What we’d love to see in 2017 is more thoughtful beverage packages. We are now in a time where guests are savvier and their pallets diverse. The entry-level Savvy B doesn’t quite cut it. You can work with your venue on the wine list to create an interesting variety without blowing your budget.

2. Flashmobs are so 2008

Now, don’t get me wrong; a professional, well-organised Flashmob can be a real hoot. God knows I’ve been involved in a few over the years. In terms of an exciting ‘wow factor’ at your conference or gala event, this has been done to death.

While we are at it, I never want to take a drink from a lady wearing a table as a skirt ever again. I also think secret locations are done & dusted...it was fun for a while but don't make me treasure hunt for my drink anymore!

There’s so many interesting and creative ideas you can incorporate into your entertainment budget. Try employing some professional choreographers for some interesting performance ideas. Also, let’s bring back the big reveal; time to dust off that old chestnut.

3. Alternative Drop Menus need to die by fire

Self-explanatory. We are all tired of the alternate drop as the only cost-effective option.

Event Managers need to work with venues/caterers to create interesting and varied options for their groups. Bring on some gorgeous share plate options and innovative menus.

4. No more death by PowerPoint

Event Managers have been doing their best to phase out death by PowerPoint over the years. We are definitely seeing an improvement and an increase in tech-based alternatives.

We would love to see more interactive digital experiences, inventive breakout areas and lounges and exploring the potential of virtual reality.

5. Dirty Bathrooms – YULCH!

For the love of all that is good and holy, get a cleaner. No more dirty bathrooms.

Also, florals and hand soaps wouldn’t go astray.

6. Spend cash on your media wall

It is damaging to your client’s brand to have haphazard, arts and craft media walls. If you have to sticky tape pieces of paper together to have a media wall at your event, then don’t have one.

A simple decal of your clients’ logo on a wall of the venue can go a long way if you have a tight budget.

Go forth and be creative! Enjoy pushing boundaries and producing incredible outcomes for your business, clients and guests. Wishing you all an exciting and prosperous year in events.
